Hiram's Run

American hospital orthopedic ward

Some bonds formed on the battlefield. Others, in the hospital.

Hiram Stoops is down to his last few dollars on the eve of winter and will be homeless within a month. Newspaper reports about a kidnapped surgeon give him an idea—his last chance in his opinion. He mails a ransom demand to the doctor’s family. The doctor returns two days later. Oak Park police chief Ben Grant reads the note while interviewing the surgeon and recognizes Hiram’s horrible penmanship. Ben owes his live to Hiram; he and his wife, Alice, were good friends of Hiram and his wife before they lost touch in the midst of the depression. Guilt and responsibility overwhelm the Grants as they consider how to find Hiram.

Ben is hamstrung by his role in the doctor’s kidnapping investigation. Alice recruits a friend of Ben’s, a former fellow marine, to help her hunt for Hiram. An FBI agent and Postal Inspector are assigned to hunt the extortionist down—with orders from the postal inspector’s corrupt boss to make the result dramatic and deadly. Alice’s search becomes desperate as the manhunt violence ramps up. It’s a race against time with Hiram’s life at stake.
